Klinger Lake People
This is the story of "Bob's Dream" - Jack Grim's place on Klinger Lake at 68403 Edgewater Beach Rd.
It starts in the summer of 1954. Robert (Bob) Grim was a student at Michigan State University in T.V. and Communication. He knew Jackie Gall, whose folks Fred and Ethel Gall had a place on Klinger Lake on Edgewater Beach. She invited him to come over, and they would take him water skiing. Bob invited me to go along. They had a Chris Craft, and that was quite a boat at that time! We went over, and got to go skiing on the rough water. We had such a good time that we decided that we would buy a boat together and use it the next summer on the lake, as we lived only 10 miles from Klinger Lake.
We did a lot of looking and planning on the boat and motor we wanted, and knew that we could not afford a Chris Craft. That was too much money for us to handle. We finally decided on an aluminum boat and a 25 horse Johnson Outboard Motor. That was a pretty big engine in that year. We were ready to go!
On Thanksgiving, my folks Forrest and Pearl Grim went to California to be with my sister Beverly Hambright in Anaheim. My brother Bob was coming to our place, now 26110 Grim Road, Sturgis, for Thanksgiving. On his way down, he was struck and killed by a drunk driver at Eaton Rapids, MI. That looked like the end of our plans for a boat and motor.
Forrest and Pearl Grim had some friends, Don and Margaret Norris, who had a cottage on Klinger Lake. Their neighbor was wanting to sell the place next to them at what is now 68403 Edgewater Beach. So as a memorial to Bob, they bought the cottage and named it "Bob's Dream" in 1955.
That summer, there was a Grim reunion, and a dedication of the cottage and boat in memory of Robert (Bob) Grim. It has been in the family since that time. A lot of friends learned to ski behind that boat. Joan and I used to do some trick skiing. She would get up on my shoulders-- that was probably the hardest one we used to do.
